Liverpool through to the last 8 of Champions League despite losing on the night.

On what should have been an even more comfortable night for Liverpool than it was, the reds managed to do just enough to squeeze through tonight – courtesy of their two away goals in the first leg against Milan.

Following a tactical cat and mouse first half in which Inter appeared to be encouraging Liverpool to press, there were few chances for either side. In a short period of first-half Liverpool dominance however, Matip headed powerfully against the bar before before Virgil Van Dijk’s close range header, from the resulting corner, was cleared with a last ditch headed clearance.

Salah hit the post early in the second half before Lautaro Martinez powered a drive into the top right hand corner from 20 yards out. With Inter now in the ascendancy, the Italians made it more difficult for themselves when former Arsenal and United striker, Alexis Sanchez was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Salah hit the post for a second time before Liverpool took control of possession in the final 10 minutes. However, they were unable to build on their 2-1 aggregate lead despite creating clear cut chances in injury time.

Liverpool will be grateful for safe passage into the last 8 of the Champions League despite being less than convincing.
