In much calmer afternoon conditions at Southern Hills, Will Zalatoris (65) and Mito Pereira (64) put on a display of glorious golf to cruise to the top of the leaderboard at -9 and -8 respectively. Zalatoris hit arguably the shot of the day at the 17th. After splatting his tee shot into the right hand rough, Zalatoris demonstrated his power and creativity with a high fade over the trees to seven feet out of heavy rough.
Justin Thomas moved a shot ahead of Rory McIlroy after registering an excellent 67 at Southern Hills.
After a succession of slow starts in the majors, Rory McIlroy has started the USPGA at Southern Hills like a golfer with something to prove. Starting his round on the 10th hole, four straight birdies on 12, 13, 14 and 15 launched McIlroy to the top of the leaderboard, where he has remained since.
U.S. golfer, Cameron Young could have the pedigree to win a major in his first year on the PGA Tour. Having failed to miss the cut in his major debut at The Masters, the 25-year-old from New York has finished in the top three of both tournaments since. At 65-1, he’s an excellent outside bet to go one better at Southern Hills.
